by placing them in a professionally supported one-to-one relationship
with mentors committed to helping them grow in their understanding
of themselves and the world around them and also committed to encouraging
them to believe in themselves and their dreams.
Vision
Statement
As a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the largest national
network of mentoring organizations serving children, families, and
communities, Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama has a vision
to develop the resources, environment, and strategies, to provide
caring adults in the life of every child in West Alabama who will
benefit from the program.
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama builds professionally-supported,
dynamic relationships which unite children with committed volunteers,
primarily on a one-to-one basis, transforming their lives, and enriching
families, communities, and society. Our work is as elementary as putting
a friend into a child's life, and as essential as putting hope into
a child's future.
Purpose
and Goals
Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children meet the challenge of growing
up and gives them the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Parenting
is a tough job for anyone in today's society, and it is particularly
difficult for parents trying to cope with multiple roles and responsibilities.
The primary goal of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program is to augment
the emotional resources of a family by fostering a quality relationship
between an adult volunteer and a child; A relationship rich in the
essential positive attention needed by a child to enable him or her
to develop a stronger sense of self-esteem, a vision for the future,
and improved relationships at home and at school. In addition to the
goals of providing friendship and a positive role model, being matched
with a Big Brother or Big Sister should:
- Improve the child's sense of self worth
- Support the child's efforts to do better in school, academically
and socially
- Provide the child with new experiences to expand his or her horizons
- Enhance the child's ability to establish and maintain positive relationships
with peers and adults
- Improve the child's ability to function in society today and tomorrow.
